Astronomers Capture First Image of Betelgeuse Companion
Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile have reported the first direct image of a companion star orbiting Betelgeuse. Observations made in December 2024 indicate that the object may have two to three times the mass of the Sun. Researchers said further observations are required to confirm its orbit and characteristics, but described the detection as a major step in studying the red supergiant.
