An Australian aviation crew carried out a rare midwinter rescue flight in Antarctica to evacuate a US citizen who required medical assistance. The operation was conducted in severe winter conditions, with Captain Al Wallach describing it as one of the most demanding missions because of the darkness, cold and difficult flying environment. Antarctic winter evacuations are uncommon because weather and limited daylight sharply restrict aviation. The patient was successfully flown out for further care.
