Renowned climber Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja was among a group killed by an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The climbers lost contact with their support team before rescue efforts confirmed the deaths. Purja, a former Gurkha and British special forces soldier, became internationally known for climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in 189 days. The tragedy again exposed the extreme risks faced by teams on Pakistan’s highest peaks.
