A competition has been launched to redesign euro banknotes, with cultural figures, music, nature and European wildlife among the possible themes. Designers may draw inspiration from personalities such as Maria Callas and Beethoven or species including bee-eaters and storks. The European Central Bank wants the new notes to remain secure, recognisable and accessible while reflecting a shared European identity. Final designs will be chosen after public consultation.
