Extreme heat is breaking temperature records across central and eastern Europe, worsening drought and wildfire risks and placing pressure on energy systems. Slovakia recorded 42°C at Dolné Plachtince, while Austria and Hungary also reported record temperatures. Low water levels and high temperatures have affected power generation in parts of the region, including Poland. More than 500,000 hectares have burned across the European Union during the season, and scientists say the growing frequency and intensity of such heat events are consistent with a warming climate.
