First image taken of Betelgeuse’s companion star
Astronomers have unveiled what they describe as the first image of a companion star orbiting the red supergiant Betelgeuse. The object, known as Betelgeuse B, was observed with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile after researchers predicted its position. Scientists estimate it has two to three times the Sun’s mass, though further observations are planned to confirm its orbit and characteristics.
