Retired Chilean army colonel Nelson Haase Mazzei has been imprisoned for his role in the 1973 killings of folk singer Víctor Jara and prison director Littre Quiroga. He had remained a fugitive after being convicted and sentenced to 25 years. Jara, a prominent supporter of President Salvador Allende, was tortured and killed after General Augusto Pinochet’s military coup, becoming an enduring symbol of human-rights abuses in Chile.
