Hungary plans full shutdown of Paks nuclear plant as Danube falls

Hungary planned a full shutdown of the Paks nuclear power plant, the country’s only nuclear station, as drought pushed the Danube to exceptionally low levels. The plant normally supplies close to half of Hungary’s electricity, but output had already been sharply reduced. Authorities said water restrictions affected more than 100 communities and forecast the river could fall further. The shutdown was a safety response to cooling-water conditions, not a permanent closure.
