India considers LPG levy to help fund strategic fuel reserves

India is considering a levy on LPG and natural gas users to help finance a planned $42 billion strategic fuel reserve, according to people familiar with the proposal. The suggested charge is Rs 1.29 per kg of LPG and Rs 1.43 per cubic metre of natural gas, which could raise household gas bills by about 2%. The proposal has not yet received Cabinet approval. It forms part of a plan to build larger reserves after recent supply disruptions exposed vulnerabilities in India’s energy imports.
