Three days of US-brokered talks between Lebanon and Israel in Rome ended on August 6 without Lebanon securing its two main goals: a genuine ceasefire in southern Lebanon and progress on an Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas. Israel continued to prioritise Hezbollah’s disarmament and a mechanism to monitor it. The talks were the second round under a June 26 framework agreement. The delegations are not expected to meet again before September as the process remains stalled.
