More than 100 aftershocks have struck southwestern Japan after a powerful earthquake killed at least 13 people and caused extensive damage around Kumamoto. Buildings and roads were damaged, utilities were disrupted and rescue teams searched collapsed structures, including a shopping complex. Hundreds of thousands of residents were advised to evacuate as authorities warned that further tremors, landslides and heat-related risks could complicate relief operations.
