Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing seeks wider legitimacy during Thailand visit

Myanmar’s military-backed President Min Aung Hlaing visited Thailand as part of an effort to gain political legitimacy more than five years after the military seized power. He met Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and signed agreements covering migrant labour, river-water management and space technology, while also addressing a business forum on investment. Human-rights groups criticised the visit, arguing that high-level engagement risks legitimising a government accused of repression since the 2021 coup.
