Pinochet-era soldier jailed for killing folk singer Víctor Jara 53 years ago

Retired Chilean colonel Nelson Haase Mazzei has been imprisoned for his role in the 1973 killing of folk singer Víctor Jara and prison official Littré Quiroga. Jara was detained after Augusto Pinochet’s coup, tortured and shot, becoming an international symbol of the dictatorship’s victims. Mazzei had fled after his conviction but was later arrested to begin a 25-year sentence. The case is viewed as one of the final major acts of accountability for Jara’s murder.
