The United Nations has warned that refugees fleeing persecution increasingly face restrictions on their right to seek asylum as public debate becomes more politicised. Speaking at an international gathering, former Iraqi president Barham Salih, himself a former refugee, urged governments to uphold established protection obligations. The UN said asylum systems must remain accessible and based on individual need rather than political pressure or collective suspicion.
